British YHA

I know what you’re thinking – What is she up to now? Youth hostels? At her age? She has got to be joking.

Come on, think about it – why would you be able to take out life membership if it wasn’t meant as accommodation for everyone, whatever your age? I’ve just stayed in Holland Park, a very expensive area of London, in a 17th century manor house no less, for £17 a night. OK, it was in a dormitory, but very clean and comfortable. And safe. The YHA takes the security of the members seriously. Great staff, interesting members visiting, self-catering facilities or solid, basic grub cooked for you, and some are even licenced (YHA London Central is – I stopped there last visit).

The YHA has some fabulous properties in amazing locations so if you visit Britain and want good, cheap accommodation, give a hostel or two a test run. You won’t regret it.

Due to a fire way back when a lot of the interior was lost and it really is now just ordinary dormitory once you go through that door, but still, what a lovely courtyard to sit in after tramping around London. And there’s a cracking boozer just down the road, none of your overcrowded, pompous, sky-high prices of many central London pubs, but an honest-to-goodness locals’ pub. Thank you, Elephant and Castle staff, for a very pleasant evening 😉
